Jonathan Swift National School
History of the school.
The school is celebrating its twentieth anniversary this year. The Jonathan Swift new school is located beside the Dunlavin playschool, but the school was not always situated there. It used to be a small school opposite the court house in Dunlavin. A priest called Fr. Jonathan Swift moved to Dunlavin parish and that’s how they got the name for the school. Fr. Jonathan Swift was the author of the book Gulliver’s Travels.
Sports
The school runs a variety of different sports for PE, for example it was hockey last year and tennis this year because they have the proper facilities for it. The school also participates in sports competitions such a cross country in Vallymount and soccer tournaments. They also participate in a traditional race day competition in June which has been running for the past forty years in which five schools - Dunlavin, Timolin, Dunamore, Athy and Blessington participated. The activates for the event is as follows
- Beginning the day with a service
- The day then continues with a lunch
- Then races go on for 2-3 hours and at the end the winners get medals and the winning school gets a trophy.
They also have rugby coaching in the school. This is currently run by Johnny Holmes, Naas Rugby club Capitan. They are also getting GAA coaching.
Green Flag
The national school currently has two green flags. It has taken a lot of hard work and effort to get these flags. The first year the school took part in this they entered in under the recycling category. The second year the school entered under the energy saving category. Both entries were successful. Next year the school plan on entering under both the water and transport categories.
