Dunlavin Community Playschool

About the playschool

The Dunlavin Playschool is around 24 years old. There are currently 57 children attending the school. The playschool has 3 part time staff and one full time worker; they also have 5 FAS childcare participants working in the playschool.

Renovations in the playschool, 6 years ago the Dunlavin playschool got a grant to renovate the school - in which they got new furniture and a playground. They also got a staffing grant which allowed them to hire more staff which greatly benefited them. In January 2010 they opened the new prefab and they were then able to have two classes of children instead of just the one. They then ran a competition to see what the two classes would be called, they had about 80-90 entries and the two winning names were Busy Bees and the other Lucky Ducks.

Drama in the playschool

 The Children take part in drama every week. The children perform in a Christmas play every year where everyone in the playschool participates and it is a great event. All the children really enjoy doing it.

The children love to participate in a range of activities which includes drama, music, keep fit, arts, baking, yoga and lots more. Every year they hold a big sports day which is always great fun for all ages! The day includes running, potato and spoon race, sack race, a tug of war and lots more exciting activities. Every child that participates gets a medal at the end and their aim is that it’s the taking part that matters more than winning.

Future plans for the playschool

This year 2010 they sent in an application form for a whole new childcare centre in Milltown. This centre would include a crèche, an afterschool centre and a playschool which would be greatly beneficial to the Dunlavin community.

Fun day

On Friday the 11th June 2010 they are having a huge fun day with entertainment provided by Wibbily Wobbly Wendy. There will also be face painting, balloon modelling and food provided. Parents and siblings are very welcome to come along on this day and the day is going to be a lot of fun for all.

ECCE

The playschool is offering ECCE which is a program that provides free playschool education for a year. This includes children from the ages of 3 to 5. This is very successful.

Mother and todler

There is a mother and toddler group every Monday from 1-3. This is for mothers and children to go to the playschool. This is great for people who are new to the area with young children it also provides a great start for the children and it really boosts their confidence.
